Pre trip inspection, hand signals, emergency stop and starting procedure
Once you’ve done all this exercises you need to know the last things for the test.
Pre trip inspection
You have to be 15 min before the test at the waiting room holding your learners license and the booking receipt.
About 10 min before the appointment one of the examiners will come and collect these 2 documents. You will be called by surname and invited at the examiners room. You will seat next to the examiner.
He will check your documents, he will check your eyes and he will write the examination paper.
After this we will go to the car, parked by you at the special parking place for the test. When you arrive there you will be invited to do Pre trip inspection to your car. That include external and internal one.
First you do external inspection walking around your car anti-clockwise and mention everything about that one after another.
PRE-TRIP INSPECTION
EXTERNAL :
- CHECK UNDER THE CAR - NO DAMAGES AND LEAKAGES
- CHECK WIPER BLADE-CLEAN, SECURE AND UNDAMAGED
- RIGHT FRONT WHEEL CHECK-THREAD ≥ 1 mm, SIDE NOT BROKEN,
TYRE PRESSURE IS OK, NUTS AND BOLTS, VALVE AND CUP ARE FINE
- LIGHTS AND INDICATORS-CLEAN, SECURE AND UNDAMAGED
- INSIDE BONNET CHECK - OIL, WATER, BRAKE FLUID &FAN BELT
- LEFT FRONT WHEEL CHECKED LIKE FIRST ONE
- LEFT BACK WHEEL CHECKED LIKE FIRST ONE
- FUEL CAP-SECURELY TIGHTENED
- WIPER BLADES, LIGHTS, INDICATORS-CLEAN, SECURE AND UNDAMAGED
- RIGHT BACK WHEEL CHECKED LIKE FIRST ONE
Then you sit inside in the car and explain the internal one.
INTERNAL :
1. ALL DOORS CLOSED
2. NO OBSTRUCTIONS IN FRONT OR BEHIND DRIVER'S SEAT
3. SEAT ADJUSTMENTS, MIRROR ADJUSTMENT
4. HAND BRAKE UP, GEAR IN NEUTRAL
5. TURN IGNITION ON, CHECK: LIGHTS, BIGHTS, AND INDICATORS-FRONT ONE
6. CHECK HOOTER AND WIPER BLADES
7. CHECK BACK INDICATORS AND BRAKE LIGHTS
8. TURN OFF IGNITION
In some testing station they still ask for hand signals, starting procedure and emergency stop.
HAND SIGNALS
While you drive on the road you might be asked to do hand signals. You do all the checks and indicators as usual just add a hand signal. Before hand signal you MUST CHECK the right blind spot to see if someone comes to cut your hand off. Example:
TURN RIGHT - with hand signals
Do 3 point checks to the right, select right indicator, do 3 point checks to the right again, check right blind spot , do hand signal for 5 seconds -hand stretched to the right, grab the steering wheel, check the intersection on arrival, check right blind spot, turn right.
TURN LEFT – with hand signals
Do 3 point checks to the left, select left indicator, do 3 point checks to the left again, check right blind spot, do hand signal for 5 seconds-protrude right hand true the window and rotate anti clockwise , grab the steering wheel, check the intersection on arrival,
check left blind spot, turn left
SLOW DOWN – with hand signals
Check middle mirror, check right blind spot, do hand signals-right hand out and shake up and down for 5 seconds, grab the steering wheel. Slow down
STOP - with hand signals
Check middle mirror, check right blind spot, do hand signals-right hand out and up for 5 seconds, grab the steering wheel. Stop
EMERGENCY STOP
Usually on the way out of the yard the examiner will warn you first and then as you drive with 2 nd gear he will hit the dash board and will shout stop. You have to stop immediately holding the steering wheel with both hands until the car stops completely. Than pull the hand brake, select neutral, release the pedals and activate the emergency lights. If the examiner is not satisfied he’she will ask you to do it again. You have only 2 chances to do it right.
STARTING PROCEDURE
When invited to do it you must say:
1. I check the hand brake is up gear in neutral.
2. I turn the ignition on and check all the gauges are in working order.
3. I suppose to pull the choke before to start the engine but this car has an automatic choke
4. I turn the key and start the engine, wait to warm up and then drive.
After the pre-trip inspection the examiner wants you to do all the parkings.
This 11 lessons cover the whole material. Than I recommend another +/- 11 to polish everything, to do the parkings on replica of the yard and to drive on the routes for the test.
